Teacher Caught in Sex Act

By Daniel Muniz

The sordid female teacher sex scandals that have rocked the nation typically involve educators leaving behind incriminating evidence for law enforcement to investigate and pursue. And with the cooperation of the victim, teachers are then ensnared by their own words by phone wiretaps or electronically by text messages and emails. More often than not, while being interrogated by investigators these miscreant educators are compelled to confess when confronted by the brutally raw evidence instead of weaving a fanciful but duplicitous explanation of what really happened.

But the sex crime at Westfield High School was totally different.

In fact, it was one of the rare times that a teacher was actually caught in the act.

Westfield High School of the Spring Independent School District is in an unincorporated area of Harris County as a suburb of Houston Texas. Shannon Kay Hrozek, age 42, taught English. And in the course of time, she developed an affinity with a 16 year old male student from one of her tenth grade classes.

Apparently Santa Claus didn’t bring enough Christmas cheer to this English teacher. And since she obviously didn’t find anyone under her mistletoe during the holidays, she decided to throw her own private Christmas party with that particular student shortly after school resumed from the Christmas vacation.

When the school day ended, Hrozek escorted her young pupil to room 143. She turned off the lights and locked the door to the empty classroom. And in their dark privacy, she held the teenager in a tender embrace. The educator then unzipped the boy’s pants and pulled down his underwear to perform oral sex on him.

However, the teacher was unaware that she had been observed by a janitor.

All along she thought that she had stealthily hid this illicit interlude from prying eyes. And besides, she locked the door so nobody was going to barge in on them. However, the custodian figured that the teacher was up to no good especially in an almost deserted campus with the lights off in a classroom. He immediately located assistant principal Dennis Jester and recounted what he saw as well as his suspicions.

Using a master key, Jester opened up classroom 143 in which he then got an eyeful.

Upon stepping into the room, the administrator saw a member of his faculty performing oral sex on a student who was seated in a chair. The assistant principal loudly cried out but it wasn’t because Hrozek forgot the mistletoe. Law enforcement was immediately notified and the teacher was arrested and charged with a felony.

The incident was as brazen at it was outrageous. A rendezvous such as this usually happens outside the campus like in the teacher’s bedroom or in a car.

But in some ways, perhaps it is not such a big surprise. For decades, employers of almost all industries have had to deal with workers sneaking into offices, closets, parking garages, staircases, and even bathroom stalls for sex. Instead of taking the passion into their homes or at least to a motel, plenty of employees have sex not only in the workplace but also while they are on the clock. The worst that could happen is that the workers get fired.

However, for a teacher to have sex with one of their students is a felony. And even if the kid has reached the age of consent, it is now irrelevant since most states make the distinction of a “position of authority” in their statutes.

But sadly for the Spring School District, this incident happens to be the third such sex crime within a year. Previously, a middle school teacher had asked one of her male students if he knew where she could buy some pot. And a romantic relationship soon ensued. Another Westfield faculty member, a male Spanish teacher, was arrested for inappropriately touching an 18 year old female student.

The only good thing that came out of this sex crime was the swift decisive action by the educational leadership. And that outcome can be chiefly attributed to the quick thinking of an otherwise street smart custodian. This janitor knew better than to interrupt the sexual act himself or to find another teacher. When it comes to a seedy situation, you have to go straight to the top and that is exactly what the custodian wisely did. This school employee did the right thing even though it was an embarrassing revelation.

Although the district did get a lot of heat from the local community about their lustful teachers, it should be noted that the chain of events happened the way that it should have happened. Spokeswoman for the Spring District, Regina Curry, zeroed in on that aspect by saying:

“When parents send their children to us, it's our job to protect their students. If a person needs to be exposed, the person needs to be exposed, so they can't just go down the road to their next employment.”

Yes, the district got a black eye but they did the right thing. A janitor knew what to do and the administrator followed up with the appropriate decisiveness by calling the cops instead of trying to sweep it under the rug. It is unfortunate that these things happen but this incident vividly demonstrates the suitable actions that the educational leadership of that school ought to follow.
